What makes two mutual funds similar?
Most sites call funds similar when they sit in the same SEBI category or follow the same benchmark. That says what a fund is allowed to buy, not what it actually holds. A flexi cap fund can look a lot like a large cap fund, and two flexi cap funds can share very few stocks. This finder ranks funds by their real holdings instead.
How the finder ranks funds
For each other fund, we take every stock both funds hold, count the smaller of its two weights, and add them up. If HDFC Bank is 9.8% of your fund and 8.1% of another, it adds 8.1% to their overlap. Funds are then sorted from the highest overlap down, with ties broken by the number of stocks in common.
Overlap (your fund, other fund) = sum of min(weight in yours, weight in the other) across stocks both hold
A worked example: if the two funds share four stocks weighted 9.8% and 8.1%, 8.2% and 7.4%, 7.1% and 5.0%, and 5.6% and 4.9%, the overlap is 8.1 + 7.4 + 5.0 + 4.9 = 25.4%.
Holdings come from each fund’s latest monthly portfolio disclosure. Stocks are matched on ISIN, and cash, debt and other assets are left out. Weights are a share of the whole fund, so for a hybrid fund only the equity part counts: a fund with 65% in equity can never show more than 65% overlap. Direct, regular and IDCW plans of one scheme hold the same portfolio, so a scheme appears once and never against itself. Index funds that track the same index hold almost identical portfolios, so they share one row. The number for any pair is the same one the mutual fund overlap checker shows.
Expense ratios and 1, 3 and 5-year returns are for the growth option of the same plan type as your fund (direct when you pick a direct plan), from Kalpi’s daily fund data. They are shown as facts and play no part in the ranking.
How to read the list
| Overlap | What it means |
|---|---|
| Over 60% | The two portfolios are close; they will tend to move together. |
| 40 to 60% | A large shared core, with real differences around it. |
| 20 to 40% | Some common names; mostly different portfolios. |
| Under 20% | Not shown: the funds hold mostly different stocks. |
A similar portfolio does not mean similar returns, cost or risk from here on. Fund managers change holdings every month, and expense ratios differ. Use the list to understand what you hold, not as a ranking of funds. To put two funds side by side on returns, risk and cost, use compare mutual funds; to check every fund you own against the others, try the Kalpi portfolio analyser.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find mutual funds similar to the one I hold?
Pick your fund above. The finder compares its latest portfolio with every other equity and hybrid fund and lists the ones that hold the most of the same stocks, with their overlap, category, expense ratio and returns side by side.
Are funds in the same category always similar?
No. A category sets what a fund may buy, such as at least 80% in large companies. Within that, managers pick very different stocks, so two funds in one category can overlap very little. Funds in different categories can also hold many of the same stocks.
What does portfolio overlap mean?
It is the share of a fund’s money that sits in the same stocks as another fund. For each stock both hold, the smaller of the two weights is counted, and these are added up. Higher overlap means the two portfolios look, and tend to move, more alike.
How much overlap makes two funds similar?
There is no official cut-off. As a rough guide, over 60% means the portfolios are close, 40 to 60% means a large shared core, 20 to 40% means some common names, and under 20% means they mostly hold different stocks. The finder lists funds at 20% and above.
Do similar funds give similar returns?
Not necessarily. Overlap is measured on the latest portfolio; the funds may have held different stocks in the past, and they will change again. Costs, cash levels and the stocks that are not shared also make returns differ. Similar holdings do not mean similar future returns.
Does the finder include index funds and ETFs?
Index funds, yes. They often appear near the top for large cap and flexi cap funds, because they hold the biggest companies, and funds that track the same index are shown together in one row under the largest of them. ETFs are not in the comparison yet; they are planned for a later version.
Why is a fund from another category ranked so high?
Because it holds many of the same stocks at similar weights. A flexi cap fund that keeps most of its money in large companies can look a lot like a large cap or ELSS fund in practice, and funds run by the same fund house often share their core holdings.
How often is the list updated?
Funds publish their full portfolio every month. The finder uses each fund’s latest disclosure, picks up new ones within a day and shows the holdings month next to the results, so the ranking can change from month to month.
Do I need to share any personal details?
No. The finder needs no login, PAN or email. It only uses the fund you pick, which sits in the page link so you can share the result.

Holdings are from the latest monthly portfolio disclosures and change every month. Past performance is not indicative of future results.
