What is a mutual fund portfolio X-ray?
A portfolio X-ray looks through your mutual funds to the stocks inside them. Four funds can look well spread out, yet most of the money may sit in the same banks, the same sector or only large companies. The X-ray adds up your real exposure, weighted by how much you put in each fund.
How the X-ray calculates it
For every stock, sector or size band, we multiply your amount in each fund by that item’s weight in the fund, then add across funds. Weights come from each fund’s latest monthly portfolio disclosure, as a share of the whole fund.
Your money in X = sum over your funds of (amount in fund × X’s weight in that fund)
Cash, bonds, money market holdings, REIT units and index futures stay in one “cash, debt and others” row, so every view adds up to all of your money. For a hybrid fund only its shares count as stocks. Futures that hedge a stock are netted against it, and shares listed outside India, which some flexi cap funds hold, show as overseas stocks.
Company size follows SEBI’s definition: the 100 largest listed companies by market value are large cap, 101 to 250 mid cap, and the rest small cap. We rank companies by their weight in the latest portfolio of a Nifty Total Market index fund, about 750 companies weighted by free-float market value; listed companies outside it count as small cap.
Funds label each stock with a sector or a narrower industry. We group those labels into twelve sectors, such as financials, IT, auto and FMCG, so a company always lands in the same sector whichever fund holds it. The highest overlap uses the overlap checker’s formula: for each stock two funds share, the smaller of its two weights, added up.

How to read your X-ray
Look at three things. Which sector has the biggest share, and is that what you intended? How much of your money sits in your top 10 stocks? How is it split between large, mid and small companies? None of these has a right answer; the X-ray shows the mix so you can compare it with what you meant to own. For a wider check of a whole portfolio, see five hidden risks in diversified portfolios.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a mutual fund portfolio X-ray?
It looks through your mutual funds to the stocks inside them and adds up where your money really sits: by stock, by sector and by company size. It uses each fund’s latest monthly portfolio and the amount you have in each fund.
How do I analyse my mutual fund portfolio?
Start with three questions: which sectors and stocks your money is in across all funds, how it splits between large, mid and small companies, and how much your funds overlap. The X-ray answers the first two; the overlap checker answers the third. To look at every fund you hold with exact amounts, upload your CAS to Kalpi’s portfolio analyser.
How is the X-ray different from the overlap checker?
The overlap checker compares funds with each other and does not need amounts. The X-ray uses your amounts to show your total exposure across up to 10 funds. Use both: the overlap checker tells you how alike the funds are, the X-ray tells you where your money ends up.
How do I find the sector exposure of my mutual funds?
Each fund’s factsheet shows its own sector split. To see your combined sector exposure, add the funds and amounts here; the X-ray weights each fund’s sectors by how much you have in it.
What counts as large cap, mid cap and small cap?
Under SEBI’s rules, the 100 largest listed companies by market value are large cap, those ranked 101 to 250 are mid cap, and the rest are small cap. AMFI publishes the ranking every six months. The X-ray ranks companies by their weight in a Nifty Total Market index fund’s latest portfolio, which covers about 750 companies by free-float market value, so a company with few shares available to trade can rank a little lower than on AMFI’s list.
Why does my X-ray show a lot in banks?
Banks and financial companies are among the largest listed companies in India, so large-cap, flexi-cap and index funds tend to hold them in size. Owning several such funds adds those stakes together.
Do I need exact amounts?
No. Rough amounts give a close picture, or choose equal split. For exact figures, upload your CAS in the portfolio analyser.
How often do the holdings update?
Funds disclose their full portfolio every month. The X-ray uses the latest disclosure and shows its month next to the results and under each fund’s name.
Do I need to share any personal details?
No. The X-ray needs no login, PAN or email. It only uses the funds and amounts you type in. Amounts stay in your browser: they are not sent to Kalpi, not stored, and left out of the share link unless you choose to include them.
For education only. This tool shows where your money sits across the funds and amounts you enter; it is not a recommendation to buy, sell or switch any fund. Holdings are from the latest monthly portfolio disclosures and change every month. Past performance is not indicative of future results.
