Portfolio analyser

That's three funds. What does your whole portfolio look like?

Upload your CAS and Kalpi reads every fund you hold: overlap across all of them, the stocks you really own, what regular plans cost you, and how the mix held up in past falls. How Kalpi handles your data

What is mutual fund overlap?

Overlap is the share of one fund's money that sits in the same stocks as another fund. Two large-cap funds often hold the same banks, IT and energy names, so owning both can mean less spread than the fund count suggests.

How the checker calculates it

For each stock both funds hold, we take the smaller of its two weights and add them up. If HDFC Bank is 9.8% of Fund A and 8.1% of Fund B, it adds 8.1% to their overlap. Holdings come from each fund's latest monthly portfolio disclosure; cash and debt are left out.

Overlap (A, B) = sum of min(weight in A, weight in B) across common stocks

Stocks are matched on ISIN, not on name. For hybrid funds only the equity part counts, measured against the whole fund, so a fund with 65% in equity can never show more than 65% overlap.

How to read your result

OverlapWhat it means
Under 20%The funds mostly hold different stocks.
20 to 40%Some shared core holdings; common for funds in nearby categories.
40 to 60%A large part of your money is in the same stocks.
Over 60%The funds behave much like each other.

Overlap is one input. Category, cost, and how each fund picks stocks matter too. The portfolio analyser looks at all of it across every fund you own.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good overlap between two mutual funds?

There is no single right number. Under 20% means the funds mostly hold different stocks; over 60% means they behave much like each other. What suits you depends on why you hold each fund.

Why do my large-cap and index funds overlap so much?

Large-cap funds pick from roughly the same 100 biggest companies, and a Nifty 50 index fund holds the 50 largest. High overlap between them is expected.

Does overlap change over time?

Yes. Funds publish their holdings every month and managers buy and sell, so overlap moves. The checker shows the disclosure month it used.

Do I need to share any personal details?

No. The checker needs no login, PAN, email or holdings. It only uses the funds you pick, and those sit in the page link so you can share the result. If you enter amounts, they stay in your browser and are never sent or added to the link.

Can I check overlap with the stocks I hold directly?

Yes. Use the stocks vs mutual funds overlap checker, or upload your CAS or connect your broker in the Kalpi portfolio analyser to see your funds and direct stocks together.

For education only. This tool shows how fund holdings overlap; it is not a recommendation to buy, sell or switch any fund.
