What is overlap between stocks and mutual funds?

Most equity funds hold the same large companies many people also buy directly: big banks, IT and energy names. If you own HDFC Bank shares and a large-cap fund, part of your fund money is in HDFC Bank too. Your real stake in that company is the shares plus the fund's slice, which can be much bigger than either alone.

How the checker calculates it

For each company, we take what you hold directly and add, for every fund you own, your amount in that fund times the company's weight in the fund. If you have ₹2 L in a fund that keeps 9.8% in HDFC Bank, that adds ₹19,600 to your HDFC Bank total. Fund weights come from each fund's latest monthly portfolio disclosure.

Your stake in a company = amount held directly + sum of (amount in fund × company's weight in that fund)

Stocks are matched on ISIN, and a hybrid fund passes on only its equity part. The figures match the Kalpi portfolio analyser.

How to read your result

What you seeWhat it means
Most of your stocks are in your fundsYour direct picks and your funds are leaning on the same companies.
One company is a large share of all your moneyThat company’s ups and downs move your whole portfolio more than you may expect.
A fund has a big share in your stocksThat fund adds less new spread to what you already hold.
Little or no overlapYour stocks and funds mostly own different companies.

Overlap is neither good nor bad on its own. It tells you where your money really sits, so you can decide whether that matches what you intended. See also the portfolio health check.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to check stock overlapping in mutual funds?

Add the stocks you hold and the funds you own to the checker above. It reads each fund's latest monthly portfolio and shows which of your stocks each fund holds, at what weight, and your total money in each company. To compare funds with each other, use the mutual fund overlap checker.

What is overlapping in mutual funds?

Overlap is when two or more of your investments hold the same stocks. Two funds can overlap with each other, and a fund can overlap with shares you hold directly. The more overlap, the more your money depends on the same few companies.

How much mutual fund overlap is acceptable?

There is no fixed limit. As a rough guide, under 20% overlap between two funds means they mostly hold different stocks, and over 60% means they behave much like each other. With direct stocks, look at the share of your total money in any one company rather than a single overlap number.

Is it okay to hold the same stock directly and through a mutual fund?

Nothing stops you, and many investors do. What matters is knowing your combined stake: your shares plus each fund’s slice of that company. This checker adds the two so you can see whether the total matches what you intended.

How to avoid overlapping in mutual funds?

Check a fund’s holdings against what you already own before you add it. Funds that pick from different parts of the market, such as large, mid and small companies or different investing styles, tend to share fewer stocks. Re-check every few months, since funds change their holdings monthly.

What is concentration risk in stocks and mutual funds?

Concentration risk is having a large part of your money in one company or sector, so a fall there hits your whole portfolio. Holding a stock directly and through several funds can quietly raise it. The largest-company card above shows your biggest single exposure.

Which stocks have the most mutual fund holdings?

Usually the largest listed companies, such as the big private banks, IT services firms and energy companies, because large-cap, flexi-cap and index funds all hold them. That is why these names show up most often when you check direct stocks against funds.

Do I need exact amounts?

No. Rough amounts give a close picture. For exact figures, connect your broker and upload your CAS in the Kalpi portfolio analyser.

How often do fund holdings change?

Funds disclose their full portfolio every month. The checker uses the latest disclosure and shows its month next to the results.

Do I need to share any personal details?

No. The checker needs no login, PAN or email. It only uses the stocks, funds and amounts you type in. Your stocks and funds sit in the page link so you can share the result. Amounts you type are not stored.
